MUSIC IN THE NEWS: Your Band's Image

The band image is something that should be mused over in the early stages when you consider starting a new band.  After all, the image that you set, define, and present is the key to your brand recognition and band reputation.

There was an article posted in the Globe and Mail today about the eccentric lead singer of the band, Gossip.  I had never heard of Gossip before, but I quickly learned what gets the media attention.  The question is whether or not the attention is worth it.  I am sure there is debate as to whether Beth Ditto is distasteful or simply free in her skin and in her life.

Ultimately, when you start a new band, your image should be thought of for both short-term and long-term success.  I am not necessarily saying that Gossip will have a short-lived career, but I am wondering what sort of timeless impact the band will have in the music industry.

Like the cool tattoo you had printed on your forehead, there may be a day when you look in the mirror and wish it wasn’t there.  All the same, be confident in the image that you build for your band…rebranding what you stand for just a few years down the road may not be an easy task.

…and may I also say, an image that is over the top may set you apart as unique, but it may also make some people… a little queasy.
