HOW TO FIND BAND MATES: Band Meeting

BandMeeting

Immediately after an audition, it will be natural to discuss the results and thoughts about the potential band mate.  Encourage your team to write down specific comments or concerns and schedule a time to meet after all candidates have been considered.

The concept is simple; organize a band meeting where each musician can be evaluated on an even playing field, rather than in the emotion of the moment.  While the emotions and impressions from an interview or audition are important, they should not be decision makers but naturally follow from the decision after it is made.

Every band will have different hot spots and key aspects to look for in a band mates.  The important thing that lines the entire screening process is preparation.  Have a list of the impact points that need to be covered in the meeting and allow for enough time to get through each point and each candidate.

Go through the strengths and value adds that each musician can bring to your team.  Analyze red flags in commitment, personality, career goals, schedule, and passion.  A problem in any of these areas could lead to bigger issues in the future.

The purpose of this meeting is to make a decision on the next band member. If all the candidates seem like a good fit, find the right musician by process of elimination through picking at details of each person.  If none of the musicians seem to be the right fit, either take a risk based on future potential, or continue your search.  Bringing the wrong person onto your team could hinder long term progress.
