STARTING A BAND: New Year's Eve Music

NewYearsEveMusic

New Year’s Eve Music will be a backdrop for the vast multitude of parties, events, socials and gatherings tonight.  Through a conversation with a co-worker today, I am reminded of the role that musicians and aspiring musicians play with each Holiday Event that graces the calendar.  There will be thousands of consumers, party planners, hosts, DJs, and friends that will be making New Year's Eve Music choices in regards to which bands to put on the set list, which CDs to click on - repeat, which songs to party shuffle, and which concerts to attend.

If you are just starting a band or looking to start a new band, there should be a burning desire for a choice like this to lead to you.  A truly melancholy form of inspiration, I am often motivated to set goals, make resolutions, and go further by merely missing out on something special.  Not only have I been almost too busy with the daily demands of life to reach out and fully plan my own New Year’s Eve plans, but I haven’t yet stopped to think about my goals for the next year – to think about why I am not where I want to be musically.

As an exit appears in site to 2009’s recession, I am just a few hours shy of the big event that marks both the end and beginning of each year.  I too am glad to be leaving the last 12 months behind and freshly target a clean slate of the year 2010.  After all, I would rather be preparing my own New Year’s Eve Music than tacking away at the keyboard in a local coffee shop right now.  However, this fresh pot of coffee is giving me just the pick-me-up I was looking for.

Although there are many resources to utilize for assistance with setting SMART (Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Timely) goals, I have never considered myself to be a great goal setter.  Rather, I am a dreamer who ends up overwhelmed with too many ideas and too few post-it notes to record it all.  As much as I may struggle with the task, I know that it is sound advice to sit down and create a list of a few strategic goals both personally and professionally.

While I work on outlining some goals for Breakthrough Band over the next week or so, I will be working to burn an imprint of a personal goal for next year’s turn.  Some great advice on goal setting that I heard recently was to create future goals in the present.  What I mean is that by picturing yourself where you want to be in the future, you can emphasize and define each goal specifically in time.  Write down the goal in present text to read as an “I AM” statement rather than an “I WILL” statement.

As my endeavor with Breakthrough Band continues into 2010, I will struggle along with each aspiring musician and learn how to start a band and promote a band.  Personally, my 2010 goal for starting a new band is bolded below.  No matter what stage of music you may be at, set one specific place that you want to be next year and spend the next 12 months making the statement a reality.  Happy New Year!

I am performing New Year’s Eve Music on December 31st 2010!
