When I began to explore the steps to starting a band, all arrows pointed in the direction of the planning room. Taking my own advice, I have thought through and sketched out the answers to each of the questions below. In addition, I have expanded on each question in order to assist your creative juices. I have also scanned my own answers to each question as examples. Check out the Media page (up top) for a free download of a template with the 8 questions.
1. What is my purpose?
Of course the point of starting a band is to make music and change the world, but each individual is impacted by music differently. The purpose of you starting your own band could be to deliver a message, to create something unique, to push artistic and musical boundaries, to stand on a soap box, or simply to live the lifestyle of the rich and famous.
2. What genre or style of music do I want to play?
For many aspiring musicians, this is a no brainer. Personally, I aspire to create music that is a collage of a variety of bands and genres. For others, there may be a debate. It is important to outline early where you plan to place yourself in the industry. Different genres appeal to different listeners.
3. What can I bring to the table?
Maybe it is experience, vocals, a specific instrument, management experience. What is it that will allow you to add value to your band? This does not necessarily have to be a talent. Some people are assets because of their financial situation, access to a studio or perfect practice space, or industry connections.
4. What is my biggest fear about moving forward?
There wasn’t even hesitation when I answered this question. I fear the finances. I am married and would love to start a family. Often, a touring music career and a family do not go together. Not to mention, I need to have finances to support my music life and my personal life. Other fears could be self-confidence issues, performance fears, lack of motivation, or any personal vice that has held you back in the past.

5. What is my inspiration?
This could be a band, this could be a specific life situation, or this could be a mentor or celebrity. In fact, this could be as simple as just knowing that the opportunity to accomplish something bigger than you ever thought possible could actually be within your grasp.
6. What am I willing to do to succeed?
What steps are you prepared to take, what sacrifices may have to be laid down? If you are not willing to put time, effort, and money (whatever form) on the line, you should ensure you think through your commitment to this venture. The stars do align for some people, but for others the journey is undoubtedly filled with nearly insurmountable obstacles.
7. Who is with me?
This could just be you at this point. There is a time to gather band mates, but this is not it. Take this time to do some inventory on where you stand as a band. 2 people with a strong vision will unquestionably go further than 4 people fully equipped yet on separate pages. It may even be a good idea to have each of your band mates go through this questionnaire to confirm you are on the same page.
8. What is my next step?
Everyone will begin at different stages. Think through what you have to do next in order to move forward. Don’t jump ahead too far. I know that I need to reposition myself financially and set some goals before I can enter the deep end.

As much as I am itching to get on my drums in front of adoring fans…TONIGHT. I am not there yet and by taking inventory of what I have, where I am, and where I need to be, I have marked out a clear beginning.
